Latest Australian Bureau of Statistics completions data shows just 54,368 new homes were completed built between October 2024 and September 2025 – the worst 12 months in over a decade.

It means that in real terms Victoria added just over 45,000 new homes to its total number of residences in the most recent 12 months of data…
Since the 2024 commencement of that timeline the state has averaged just over 4800 new homes a month, with 101,010 completed.

The Housing Statement numbers were laughable from the outset. Worse, Victoria has seen the least improvement in dwelling approvals (which are a precursor to completions) of any State in the last 2 years.
Victoria has still built "the most" homes over recent periods, but it had to given it also has, by far, the highest population growth. Adjusted for population, Victoria falls well down the #housingsupply rankings.
Worse – the only thing that kept supply relatively strong in the State was a stream of greenfield land. New releases have now been stymied to the point where the ability to delivery new supply in future will be well constrained.
#familysizedapartments won't fill that gap, no matter how much "streamlining" our friends at Department of Transport and Planning continue to focus on it.
